思い出のマーニーの“Fine On The Outside”だった。

Editing Hope

The Japanese editor and thinker Seigow Matsuoka devoted much of his life’s work to exploring what lies beyond the modern nation-state.

He reminded us that no human being belongs to only one story.

We belong to families.

To places.

To languages.

To music.

To landscapes.

To memories.

To friendships that cross oceans long before they cross borders.

His idea of editing was never simply about arranging knowledge.

It was about restoring relationships.

About discovering the invisible threads that already connect people, cultures, nature, and time.

Reading Matsuoka today, I often think of Ivan Illich.

Illich wrote of conviviality—a way of living in which people create meaning together rather than serving institutions.

Different words.

A shared hope.

That relationships are stronger than systems.

Today, nations still speak the language of allies and enemies.

Yet many of us have already met.

A filmmaker in Tehran.

A musician in New York.

A friend in Barcelona.

A conversation on a beach in Okinawa.

Long before governments decide who belongs to whom, our lives have already become intertwined.

States can classify people.

But they cannot easily erase a shared memory.

They cannot undo a song played together.

They cannot silence a story honestly exchanged.

The twentieth century taught us how nations wage war.

Perhaps the twenty-first century can teach us how relationships endure.

Cinema.

Music.

Travel.

None of these exist merely for entertainment.

They quietly remind us that every genuine encounter expands the world we share.

Borders are drawn on maps.

Culture is drawn in the human heart.

And the heart has never learned to recognize borders in quite the same way.

Perhaps this is the hope of our century.

Not that humanity will finally become one nation.

But that we will remember something even more fundamental:

We have already met.

And because we have met, we can choose not to lose one another.

A Note from Tonight

The Writing Life / 本を書くの
