Like the moon appearing quietly in the night sky.
There is a line often attributed to Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī:
‘As you start to walk on the way, the way appears.’
For some reason, these words are finding their way deeply into me now.
Don’t search for the path.
Walk.
The path is not something waiting at the end of the journey.
It appears in the act of walking itself. Perhaps this is not so different from something I have come to cherish: the time spent waiting for the moon.
We do not go looking for the moon.
We look up at the sky,
listen to the wind and the waves,
and quietly stay with time passing.
Then, almost without noticing,
the moon is there.
Perhaps the future is like that too.
We do not have to see everything before we move.
We do not need a certain answer before we begin.
We take the step that is possible today.
We meet someone.
We listen to music.
We listen to a place.
We take another step toward whatever quietly moves us.
And little by little, a way begins to appear where, only moments before, there seemed to be none.
We do not find the way and then walk it.
We walk,
and it becomes the way.
Like the moon appearing quietly in the night sky.
Perhaps the way, too, reveals itself like this.
